This guy inadvertently livetweeted the death of Osama bin Laden.

“giant swatter” lol

One man’s giant swatter is another country doing the swatting.

I thought Osama was captured/killed days ago?

THERE SURE ARE A LOT OF HIGH HORSES OUT THERE TONIGHT

I forgot that some of you KNOW EVERYTHING EVER and also can apparently PREDICT THE FUTURE.

Post

Well, I clearly should just stay away from Tumblr for a while (longer), because some of the Osama-related stuff I’m seeing is just not material I care to read/see. So the rest of you, have fun, or whatever it is you’re doing.

This Day In History of the Day: Eight years ago today, President George W. Bush made a historic arrested landing on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, and delivered his infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech.

Okay this is funny.

Actually, this isn’t funny. It’s shameful on all kinds of levels.

The Muslim woman as constructed by book covers designed to make white people feel better about themselves. Note two cases of the same image used twice.

Image is of various book covers, showing female-presenting people wearing niqab or burqa, mostly with only ~exotic~ eyes showing. Titles of the books are along the lines of “Behind the Veil”, etc.

O HAI white gaze! As a Moozlum, I would like you to know that a) I very much desire saving and b) I could blow you up! And because I am magic, these two conflicting things can exist in perfect equilibrium.

And that’s your Thursday moment for today. Bye now.

Holy wow. I bet that’s what, 1/100th of books out there like this? Sigh.

Really?  Did I accidentally move to the US and not realize it?

WHAT. THE. F*CK. ???!!!??

If the Cons get a majority, if they even get a larger minority than they used to… I don’t know… I don’t even have words… this is just too f*cked up.

Now Canada is trying to defund Planned Parenthood? WHAT THE HELL CANADA, YOU’RE BETTER THAN THIS

Is the thinking that if they can make PP go away, people will stop having abortions? I mean, I just seriously do not understand their end goal. And they clearly do not understand that abortions WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN NO MATTER WHAT.

So, someone just e-mailed me asking if I'd be interested in this article for my blog

[TW for victim-blaming]

The article is called “20 Ways to Lessen Your Risk of Sexual Assault.” Of course, not a one of them deals with the whole “don’t sexually assault someone” approach.

I declined the article, with this response:

Thank you for thinking of my blog. I’ll have to decline this, however, as I believe we need to stop putting the onus of preventing sexual assault onto potential victims, and rather start educating potential assailants on how to not sexually assault someone. For example, I’m not going to tell someone to limit how much they drink (unless they’re driving); I’m going to tell someone not to put drugs in anyone’s drink.

“For the 400 U.S. taxpayers with the highest adjusted gross income, the effective federal income tax rate—what they actually pay—fell from almost 30 percent in 1995 to just under 17 percent in 2007, according to the IRS. And for the approximately 1.4 million people who make up the top 1 percent of taxpayers, the effective federal income tax rate dropped from 29 percent to 23 percent in 2008. It may seem too fantastic to be true, but the top 400 end up paying a lower rate than the next 1,399,600 or so.”

Business Week (Go read the whole interesting/infuriating article.)

I have no problem paying taxes. But it still baffles me how a larger portion of MY money belongs to the government, but a smaller portion of RICH PEOPLE’S money belongs to the government. I understand marginal tax brackets and all that, and I’m not for a flat tax, but effective tax rate — that’s overall, correct? So how is it that rich people’s money belongs more to THEM than my money belongs to ME? This is where the conservative ideological argument loses me.

It’s also where the Tea Party loses me. Do they base their tax policy proposals on the possibility that one day they might be rich, and if/when that happens, they don’t want Uncle Sam reaching into their pockets? Because as long as the rich pay less taxes, percentage-wise, than the rest of us, the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. It’s a self-defeating proposition that makes it more, not less, difficult to transition into that higher tax bracket.

“The big lie about capitalism is that everyone can be rich. That’s impossible. Capitalism works only if the vast majority of the population are kept poor enough to never quit working, are kept poor enough to accept distasteful jobs society cannot function without. If everyone were a millionaire, who would empty the trash or repair the sewers? It follows that the poorer the general population is made, the greater the worth of the money held by the wealthy, in terms of the lives which may be bought and sold with it.”

“Your experience tells you that no women will demand Tolkien? Okay. Let’s talk about my experience. I saw many women in movie audiences thrilled to see Orlando Bloom kick butt as an elf, not just because he has a pretty face but because he was a great character in an epic tale. I saw a lot of women in line to have their photo taken with the Game of Thrones display at WonderCon in San Francisco recently. I regularly read online pieces by geek girls such as Amy Ratcliffe, Teresa Jusino, Janna O’Shea and Jill Pantozzi. I listen to the “Geek Girls Network Podcast” and the women of “The Escape” on GetThePointRadio.com. I visit GeekGirlCon.com and The League of Extraordinary Ladies. I follow the work of Blair Butler, Amber Benson, Grace Randolph, Jessica Mills and Felicia Day. I read books by Richelle Mead that involve a woman enacting quite a bit of violence on vampires. One of my favorite superhero writers? Gail Simone. An artist I love who is great at depicting action scenes in superhero comics? Amanda Conner. And hey, here’s something shocking. Do you know who recommended the book Game of Thrones to me? My girlfriend and four other women. Amazingly, they read it despite the fact that it was in the Boy Fiction section of the bookstore. I don’t know how they were even allowed to enter that section and were able to convince the store to let them purchase books from it, but they’re quite crafty and skilled so I imagine a pulley system and a sonic screwdriver must have been involved.”
